SPOTLIGHT PROJECT:
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
Washing my hands keeps me healthy!
In the rural highlands of Guatemala, where waterborne illnesses ravage communities, this simple message can save a child’s life.
Pueblo a Pueblo’s WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools) project is teaching children good habits to prevent disease and improve health, nutrition, and the ability to concentrate in school.
WASH integrates hygiene lessons into the children’s schoolwork, provides access to a steady water supply, and installs and repairs hand-washing stations and separate boys’ and girls’ bathroom facilities at the schools.
Pueblo a Pueblo raises matching funds for WASH through a partnership with H2O for Life. In 2012, we will work with Matoska International School and Garlough Environmental Magnet Schoolin Minnesota, the University of Texas Elementary School in Texas, and Bate Middle School in Kentucky to raise funds to improve water and sanitation conditions in Guatemala’s Chacaya and La Cumbre elementary schools. This partnership with students in the USA provides a chance for children to learn about the global water crisis while taking action to support a water, sanitation, and hygiene education project with a partner school in Guatemala.
Thanks to the hard work and generosity of the children and families in these US partner schools, children in the Santiago Atitlan region will be healthier and have the chance to stay in school and succeed!
